Nothing beats the feeling of coming home and putting on your favourite comfy slippers — and this is the time of year they earn their keep. Our collection splits neatly in two. On one side, proper comfort slippers from Padders and Rohde, with adjustable straps, warm linings and supportive soles. On the other, the pretty ones — leopard-trim mules from Lunar, Spanish espadrille-style slippers from Toni Pons, and cork-soled DeValverde slippers you can wear to the bin without a second thought. As with everything we sell, returns are free within 30 days if a pair doesn't suit.

Which slippers are best for wider feet or swollen ankles?

This is the question that brings most people to a slipper page in October, and it's where Padders earn their reputation. Every Padders style is made on a wide fitting, and most have a velcro or touch-close strap across the front, so the slipper opens right up to go on and then adjusts to the foot — which matters if your feet change size through the day, or if bending to pull on a closed slipper is a struggle. The Hush and Repose styles are warm-lined as well. If you're buying for a parent or someone with swollen feet, start here and check the fitting stated on the product.

Can I wear slippers outside?

Some, yes. A slipper with a soft fabric sole is for indoors only — it'll wear through and pick up wet the moment it meets a path. But several of ours have a proper sole. DeValverde build theirs on a natural rubber sole with a cork filling and a ridged non-slip tread, so they're fine for the bin, the car or the washing line. Padders and Rohde also use a firmer outsole that copes with a step outside the door. The product description will say which — look for "outdoor sole" or "non-slip".

Mule or full slipper — which is better?

A mule has an open back, so you slide straight in — easiest of all to get on and off, and the one to choose if you're forever kicking slippers off under the desk or the sofa. The trade-off is that it can slap at the heel when you walk and it's easier to lose off the foot. A full-back slipper wraps around the heel and stays put, which is safer on stairs and better if you're on your feet doing things around the house. If security matters — for anyone unsteady on their feet — go full-back with a strap.

Are slippers true to size?

It depends on the brand. Our slippers come from several different makers and each fits a little differently, so the sizing note on the individual product is the one to go by rather than any general rule. Warm-lined slippers in particular can feel snug at first and then ease as the lining compresses, so a slightly close fit on the first wearing is usually right. Buying slippers as a gift?

Slippers are one of the few gifts where the size genuinely matters and you can't ask without giving the game away. Two ways round it: buy from the Padders or DeValverde ranges, where the adjustable straps and forgiving fit cover a size either way, or use our gift voucher and let them choose. Either way, returns are free within 30 days, so if you've guessed wrong they can swap without any fuss.
