Women's Chelsea Boots
Every woman needs a stylish and versatile pair of Chelsea boots. The elasticated side panels and pull-tab at the back are what make a Chelsea a Chelsea — no laces, no zip, just step in and go — and it's why they've outlasted almost every other boot shape. Our collection runs from the classic flat leather Chelsea to chunky platform and block-heeled versions, in black, brown, navy, khaki and burgundy, with brands including Gabor, Rieker, Tamaris, Paul Green and Wonders. As with everything we sell, returns are free within 30 days if a pair doesn't suit.
Flat or chunky — which Chelsea boot should I go for?
They're really two different boots that happen to share a shape. The classic flat Chelsea is the one that goes with everything — slim leather, low profile, sits neatly under a trouser hem or with a skirt and tights. It's the more formal of the two and the one most likely to still be in your wardrobe in five years. The chunky or platform Chelsea has a thicker, lugged sole that adds height and a more casual, current look. It's the better choice with jeans, especially a wider leg, and the extra sole gives you more distance from wet pavements in winter. Most customers who wear Chelsea boots regularly end up with one of each.
Are Chelsea boots comfortable to walk in?
Generally yes, and more so than most ankle boots, because there's no hardware to rub and the elastic panels move with your foot. The thing to watch is the fit across the instep — a Chelsea boot has to be snug enough there to stay on without a fastening, so if you have a high instep, look for a boot with generous elastic panels or a slightly deeper cut. Chunky-soled versions are also lighter than they look on most of the brands we stock, since the platforms are built from EVA rather than solid rubber.
Will a Chelsea boot fit if I have a wider foot?
Some will, and the elastic panels help — they give a Chelsea more forgiveness across the top of the foot than a zipped boot. But the toe box is still a fixed shape, so if you know you need a particular fitting, that matters more than the boot style. Gabor offer G and H fittings on selected styles, and Rieker build extra room into the toe box as standard. Are Chelsea boots true to size?
It depends on the brand. Our Chelsea boots come from six different makers and each fits a little differently, so the sizing note on the individual product is the one to go by rather than any general rule. One thing that does apply across the board: because a Chelsea has no fastening, it needs to grip properly, so avoid going up a size for extra room — an over-large Chelsea slips at the heel and feels loose across the instep. How do I look after leather and suede Chelsea boots?
Spray them before you wear them, not after they get wet — a protector spray on clean, dry suede or leather is the single best thing you can do. Let wet boots dry naturally away from a radiator, since direct heat hardens the leather and can perish the elastic. Give the elastic panels a wipe rather than a scrub, and brush suede back up once it's fully dry.
