Will knee boots fit my calf?
This is the question we're asked more than any other, and it's the main reason people hesitate to order knee boots online. The honest answer is that it depends on the boot as much as on the leg.
A structured leather knee boot has a fixed shaft. It's a beautiful thing when it fits, but if your calf is wider than the boot was cut for, there's no give to work with. A boot with an elasticated shaft works the opposite way, shaping to your leg rather than the other way around — which is why customers who've given up on knee boots often get on well with them. You'll find those styles here and in our sock boots section, which explains that construction in more detail.
We'd stop short of promising any boot will suit any leg, because calves vary enormously and so does where you want the boot to sit. If you're unsure, give us a call on 01 8490847 and we'll talk you through which styles have the most give — or call into the shop in Skerries and try a pair on, which takes five minutes and saves a lot of back and forth.
Knee high or mid-calf — which is more wearable?
Height changes the boot more than people expect. A full knee-high finishes just below the knee and gives you the longest line, which is why it works so well with a dress or a skirt — but it needs a bit of room behind the knee or it can dig in when you sit down. A mid-calf boot stops a few inches lower and is the more forgiving of the two: easier on a fuller calf, easier to walk in, and it suits a wider leg trouser or a midi skirt better than a knee-high does. If you're between the two, think about what you'll actually wear them with rather than which looks better on the shelf.
What heel height should I go for?
Most of our knee boots sit on a block heel, which gives you height with a far more stable base than a stiletto — much easier on the feet if you're on them all day or walking on cobbles. If you want something you can genuinely wear everywhere, look at the flat and low-heeled styles, and if you're after height for an occasion there are higher block heels and a platform option in the range. You can filter by flat, wedge or heel at the top of this page.
Are knee boots true to size?
It depends on the brand. Our knee boots come from several different makers and each fits a little differently, so the sizing note on the individual product is the one to go by rather than any general rule. One thing that does apply across the board: don't go up a size to get more room around the calf. Length and calf are separate measurements, and sizing up leaves the boot too long, which causes its own problems with the heel slipping and the shaft bunching at the ankle. If the calf is the concern, look at the stretch styles instead. If you're between sizes or unsure, give us a call on 01 8490847 and we'll advise on the particular style.
How do I look after suede and leather knee boots?
Spray them before you wear them, not after they get wet — a protector spray on clean, dry suede is the single best thing you can do. Let wet boots dry naturally away from a radiator, since direct heat hardens both leather and suede, and brush the nap back up once they're fully dry. Storing them upright, with a boot shaper or a rolled magazine in the shaft, stops them creasing at the ankle over the summer. We stock protector sprays and brushes in our shoe care section, and there's more advice on our shoe care page.
